Baby pigeons
When we came back from our vacation we had a pleasant surprise. There was a pigeon's nest in the window sill of the kids room and there were two baby pigeons. The kids were so excited. They told their friends and brought home some friends to see the little birdies. My one and a half year old was also so excited as she was very fond of crows, which she had seen a lot in India. The mother pigeon used to come and feed the babies once in a while and we were really astonished by the sense of direction of the mommy as we live in the 14th floor and every window sill looks the same.Life went on the birds were happy and we were happy and the little ones started taking small steps. Now comes the sad part of the story. The intelligent me, thought of putting some food so that mamma pigeon doesn't have to fly so far to collect food. I checked on the net and found i can give soft bread pieces incase i don't have small grains. I thought of rice which would be soft for them. I opened the window and put the rice near the nest. The little birds got so scared and took of on their first flight. They ended up in two different balconies on the opposite building. Now the mamma bird came to the nest searching for her kids and i felt like kicking myself. I was praying it should be able to find them and me and my kids started tracking mamma . She found one of them and there was something sort of a tussle like why did you leave the nest and she forced the little one to fly to another balcony. Unfortunately the little one slipped and fell and got stuck between a carton and the balcony glass. The situation was worser now as temperature soars really high during the daytime and surely the little one will be baked alive. Mamma was standing near helpless( kick me again, what an idiot i was). my six year old was as worried as me looking out of the window. My elder one(9 years) gave me a bit of philosophy " mom maybe God wanted it to happen that way..." I couldn't buy into that theory. So I was wondering what else could i do.We saw a man and a boy coming out in the next balcony. I waved frantically , pointing in the direction of the bird. The boy behaved as if he didn't see me and the dad too looked up and didn't respond and they went on with their work. This being a conservative place i didn't try anymore screaming and waving. To make the longstory short, nextday morn my spouse and kids went to the next bldg. to inform that there was a bird stuck in their balcony. But alas the birdie was dead and Iam not able to forgive myself. Hope atleast the other little one lives to tell the story.......
